What is the TMJ?

The Temporo-mandibular Joint (TMJ) joins the jaw to the lower part of the skull, enabling us to open and close our mouths. The TMJ consists of a joint capsule and three (lateral, sphenomandibular and stylomandibular) ligaments. The TMJ is also surrounded by various muscles including the masseter, temporal and lateral pterygoid muscles. There is a tiny disc that is positioned between the jaw bone and temporal bone, protecting the TMJ from shock during everyday actions such as chewing food and opening and closing the mouth.

What causes TMJ syndrome?

TMJ syndrome is a painful inflammation of the TMJ often caused by

  • Grinding the teeth
  • Continuous Clenching of the Jaw
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Congenital Bone Deformities

Symptoms of TMJ Syndrome:

  • Pain in the jaw joint and facial muscles which may radiate to the muscles of the shoulders and neck
  • Pain when chewing, yawning or talking
  • Tension headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Cracking sounds when opening or closing the mouth
  • Jaw may “lock” making opening or closing the mouth difficult or impossible.

What is Biopuncture?

Biopuncture is a method of practice whereby homeopathic remedies are injected into acupuncture points and points of injury, pain or spasm in order to initiate healing and reduce pain and inflammation. Biopuncture makes use of a very fine and small needle in order to administer the homeopathic remedies painlessly and effectively.

Biopuncture is most commonly used for the treatment of:

  • Arthritis
  • Sports injuries
  • Nerve disorders such as sciatica
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Chronic sinusitis
  • Vertebral disc healing after injury

Systemically biopuncture may also be used as a means of:

  • Improving energy
  • Improving muscle recovery in athletes
  • Boosting the immune system
  • Regulating healthy hormone levels
  • Reducing migraines

How does Biopuncture Help?

By injecting around the TMJ and into the surrounding muscles, biopuncture helps to reduce inflammation, pain radiation, muscle spasm and tension. Depending on the cause of the TMJ syndrome, biopuncture may also improve joint health by stimulating tissue and cartilage repair in order to restore the integrity of the joint.
