Hormone imbalances in women is a rather common occurrence- especially given the lifestyle that the majority of us lead which includes high stress and trying to balance between being mothers, employees and wives. Imbalances in progesterone, oestrogen or Testosterone can lead to various complications ranging from premenstrual syndrome to dysmenorrhea and infertility. There are many herbs and homeopathic remedies which aid in correcting hormonal imbalances and the symptoms which arise as a result.

What are the Symptoms of Hormone Imbalance?

There are two major female sex hormones which are released by the ovaries- Oestrogen and Progesterone. Both hormones play an important role in stabilizing mood and maintaining the uterine lining. However, another incredibly important hormone is Testosterone which can wreak havoc when out of balance.

Oestrogen: This female hormone is responsible for stimulating the growth of various reproductive tissues, maintaining optimal bone health, increasing neurotransmitters such as Serotonin and maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system. Oestrogen is highest right after menstruation as it’s main function is to start rebuilding the new uterine lining every month.

Progesterone: This female hormone is at its highest in the middle of the menstrual cycle and continues to thicken the uterine lining in order to prepare the uterus for a possible pregnancy. Progesterone is also incredibly important for maintaining a pregnancy. When there is no pregnancy, progesterone levels decline and this results in the shedding of the uterine lining which is known as menstruation.

How is a Hormone Imbalance Confirmed?

After a thorough case assessment and physical examination, you will most likely be sent for some blood tests to measure your Oestrogen, Progesterone and Testosterone levels. Your hormone levels will then be compared to the normal ranges in accordance to the different stages of the menstrual cycle. You will also most likely be sent for other blood tests to rule out any other conditions which may lead to menstrual irregularities.

How are Hormone Imbalances Treated Naturally?

The treatment protocol used is dependent upon which hormones are out of balance. It is incredibly important to correct any hormone imbalances with the guidance of a qualified and registered Homeopath.

Agnus castus: Commonly known as Chaste tree, this herb has a wonderful ability to increase levels of progesterone and balance the levels of Oestrogen. This is a wonderful herb to use in cases of premenstrual syndrome and uterine fibroids. Agnus castus has further shown the ability to reduce mastalgia (breast tenderness) which occurs before menstruation.

Rubus idaeus: I personally love red raspberry as it works wonderfully as an all-round uterine tonic. R. idaeus has the ability to reduce the size of uterine fibroids, reduce dysmenorrhea and balance the levels of Oestrogen and Progesterone released by the ovaries.

Sepia officianalis: This homeopathic remedy is wonderful to use in cases of dysmenorrhea where there is a sensation as if the uterus is going to “fall out”. Women needing this remedy are often exhausted from their motherly responsibilities and suffer from depression.

Sabina: A wonderful remedy to use in cases of excessive uterine bleeding which occurs for prolonged periods of time. The bleeding is usually associated with severe menstrual pain which is felt in the thighs, back and abdomen.

Graphites: A useful remedy to use in cases of premenstrual syndrome where there is associated constipation, breast tenderness and water retention.

Chinaherb Relaxed wanderer: A wonderful product which aids those who suffer from increased levels of anxiety and emotion during menstruation.
